Dog Weight Loss Tips

Monday, March 30th, 2009

Jane Dinunzio asked:

Tips for Overweight Dogs

An overweight dog does not look healthy, and this only occurs because of overfeeding, not because they choose this lifestyle. It is only through overfeeding that we make this happen to our pets.

DISEASES CAUSED BY DOG OBESITY

If you want to learn about weight loss for dogs, the first thing you should do is consult your vet and get his approval and advice. That said and done, there are many reasons and tips to help you achieve the goal of a healthy pet.

Obesity in our pets is ultimately our responsibility. After all we are in control of their nutrition. It has become an epidemic that is associated with our own “couch potato” lifestyle. There are many problems that can be caused by obesity in our dogs which can be prevented if they are fed an all natural healthy organic diet. Some of these ailments (which mimic our own problems with over indulgence) include:

JOINT AND WALKING DIFFICULTIES - this is due to added weight and stress put on joints, bones, and muscles. This can cause back problems, hip dysplasia, lethargy, and aggravation of arthritis.

HEART AND RESPIRATORY DISEASES - Obesity causes extra stress on the heart and lungs, making them tork harder than a dog that is physically fit.

DIABETES - This is more prevalent in obese pets.

LIVER DISEASE - This is also associated with obese pets.

SKIN PROBLEMS - Being fat causes difficulty in your pet’s grooming ability. Just as overweight humans have trouble reaching their feet to tie their shoes when a fat belly is in the way, a dog can’t reach all areas that need self cleaning. Dirt and bacteria can become embedded in fat rolls and cause infections.

STOMACH PROBLEMS - There is a painful and life threatening condition, called pancreatitis, which is seen more and more in obese pets.

Just as the above diseases mimic our own obesity related problems, they are curable or preventable if you keep your dog healthy, active and fed nutrionally premium dog food.

WEIGHT LOSS TIPS FOR DOGS

Putting your pet on a fat reducing diet and increasing exercise, as prescribed by your vet, is the best way to show your love to your pet. There are many excellent healthy organic dog foods available that are high in protein and low in fat. Check the labels carefully and make sure you buy the best organic dog food you can afford, with the highest amount of organic ingredients and low fat content.

Elimination of bad high calorie treats and table scraps is the easiest weight loss for dogs tip there is. Extra calories from treats pile up quickly. Choosing the wrong type of high fat, high calorie treat for your dog is not a good practice, so be aware of the difference between good and bad treats. Choose healthy!

Fleas In Dogs - Treating Flea Infected Dogs!

Monday, March 30th, 2009

Abhishek Agarwal asked:

Dog owners are always battling with fleas in dogs regularly in their efforts towards having healthy lives. The dog is highly uncomfortable with this infection. The fleas are small insects that stays on the dog’s body, feeding on the blood of the dog and also laying its eggs on the dog’s body - the thought of this alone is irritating. I reality this irritates the dog seriously, causing it to itch and this causes the loss of the dog’s body fur. What you should bear in mind is the fact that you need to treat the fleas on your dog early, this is because the fleas if left untreated to spread around the house infesting every living organism in the house.

How to Know If Your Dog is Infested with Fleas

In case you are wondering why your dog’s body is itching, the dog might be infested with fleas - that’s why! The best way to find out is to check the body of the dog. Fleas are small but obvious to the eyes, you can discover their presence on the dog’s body by checking the fur of the dog. The first place to check is at the underbelly, or beneath the collar, if you see traces showing the presence of teh dog fleas, then you should take the dog to the Vet doctor for proper treatment.

The Treatment For Dog Fleas

There are many medications used to avoid the infection of fleas on dogs, some of these are: sprays, powders and collar. It is better to go for a serious treatment if the fles has already infested the dog - this is the best way out, since the infection is already established and will require treatment to remove it completely. Preventive measures are only taken to stop or prevent the infection of the dog.

The process of the infection starts with the dog and then spreads all around the house, because the fleas lays so many eggs a day and this drops from the body of the dog, filling the whole house. So, to completely eradicate the infection the whole house will be treated so as to stop re-infection.

An oral treatment can be given to the dog to kill every egg or larva of the fleas, that way, the reproduction of fleas are ended. you should go ahead to clean your house, removing and killing every flea to keep the enviroment free from fleas. After completing the treatment, prevent it always to maintain a neat and healthy dog.

Guide To Dog Friendly Hotels For The Pampered Pooch

Monday, March 30th, 2009

Rebecca Prescott asked:

In France, small dogs have always been pampered and accepted virtually anywhere their owner goes. That can now be extended to cities worldwide and is especially true of Hotels at the top-end of the market.

There are two main reasons for this. Increasing numbers of clients wish to have their dog with them to maximize the pleasure of the vacation. This is a huge market - around 62 million people in America own dogs and 29 million of them take their dogs with them when then go travelling. The other factor is that many owners feel guilty at putting their dog into kennels. This all reflects the way dogs are now seen much more as part of the family, rather than a mere pet.

NUMBER CRUNCHING

A survey on behalf of a Hotel chain came up with some surprising findings. 76% of respondents claimed that they would show more loyalty to a hotel chain that was prepared to accommodate their dogs - even if they weren’t bringing their dog on vacation! 16% admitted that they had, at one time or another smuggled their dog into a hotel that wouldn’t accept pets!

WHAT CAN MY DOG EXPECT FROM A HOTEL?

Most dog-friendly hotels offer basics such as food and water. Others add nice touches like a gift on arrival and custom-made ID tags. The more expensive the hotel, the more luxuries your dog can expect to indulge in. You will be provided with toys, leashes and collars, **** scoops and even videos for your dog to watch.

Dogs can now get organic roasted chicken and Aberdeen Angus steaks from room service. Some hotels offer dog meals that have been developed with the help of a veterinarian - especially to help your dog deal with the stress of travelling! The hotel concierge will organize dog walkers and a pet sitter, if you’re planning to spend some time away from your dog. One of the most amazing things offered in a Pampered Pooch Package is the use of a ‘dog translator’ so that guests can communicate better with their canines!

DOGS LOVE TO GROOM!

If you go for a relaxing pedicure, you dog can lie next to you and have one too. In-hotel grooming parlors are increasingly popular. Why not treat your pampered pooch to some highlights, lowlights or French braiding? Teeth cleaning and massage is also on offer.

THE TOP TEN DOG-FRIENDLY CITIES IN THE USA AND CANADA ARE:

1. Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

2. San Francisco, California

3. Chicago, Illinois

4. Boston, Massachusetts

5. Austin, Texas

6. Seattle, Washington

7. New York City

8. Long Beach, Los Angeles

9. St Louis, Missouri

10. Northern Virginia Area of Washington DC

THE SKY’S THE LIMIT

Here’s a quick run-down on what your dog could get at a stay in a high-end hotel in The Big Apple:

* Personalized ID tag plated in 22 carat gold

* Spritz treatments for the dog’s coat in a choice of aromatherapy fragrances

* Luxury dog pillow in the shape of a bone

* Home-baked dog biscuits and treats

* 300 thread count sheets on a special dog mattress

* Room service for dogs offering appetizers, entrees and deserts

The hotels can’t control the weather but they can make life more bearable for your dog with the loan of a trench coat (rainproof, naturally!), a leather jacket or if it turns chilly - a cashmere sweater. It’s a dog’s life!

These are Some of the Benefits of Organic Pet Food

Monday, March 30th, 2009

Muna wa Wanjiru asked:

Organic pet food is fast gaining popularity. The sale of organic pet food is increasing at a rate, which is three times greater than human organic food sale. People are getting aware that like humans, pets too need healthy and holistic food. Organic food means the food that is manufactured without the use of chemical substances like the preservatives, antibiotics, pesticides and hormones. Organic food is the healthier form of food, which contains 18 organic nutrients that are certified. Organic pet food has a positive impact on the health and the emotional well being of the pet resulting in increase in its longetivity.

The organic pet food helps in improving the skin conditions and allergies of your pet. This is because the organic food is manufactured using high quality grains and sources that are high in protein. Organic food also helps in increasing the immune system of your pet keeping away health problems like the skin infections. In addition, since the organic food is free of chemical substances, your pet is not affected by the health problems due to these chemicals.

The organic pet food is also low on fat and therefore, organic food does not create weight problems in your pet. It is studied that cats and dogs with greater weights are more likely to suffer from back problems, organic failure and hip dysphasia. Since, the organic food contains high nutrition per ounce of food your pet does not tend to over eat and gets satisfied with small amount of food does maintaining his body weight.

The organic pet food is conveniently available for dogs and cats. Though the organic food is expensive as compared to the non-organic pet food, they provide higher benefits to the pets. Organic dog treats are also available for the dogs, which are hypoallergenic and also free of wheat gluten. The advantage of organic pet food is that the organic food is easy for the pet to digest, as there are no chemicals added, which results in the absorption of all the healthy nutrients present in the food.

To cut down on the cost one can even make organic pet food at home. While preparing the organic food at home it is very essential to choose only the fresh ingredients including the poultry products like the beef, turkey, and chicken. It is advisable to use vegetables like the carrots as it contains beta-carotene, which is very useful for the pet.  It is also recommended that the meat be thoroughly cooked and blended together with the help of a food processor. The vegetables and the meat must be mixed and cooked together with the use of brown rice for the binding purpose. Thus, your organic homemade food is ready to be served to your pet.

The organic food made at home needs to be stored in an airtight container and should not be stored more than four to five days. Serving of the home made organic food should be done as earlier, practiced with the ordinary food. For example, if your dog is in a habit of eating one cup of dry food a day then the organic food must be served in the similar quantities. The home made organic pet food can be prepared once a week.

How to Manage Dog Allergies

Sunday, March 29th, 2009

Jane Dinunzio asked:

The most common reason dog’s continuously lick, itch and scratch is fleas, ticks and mites, which is also an extremely problem to treat. Fleas can cause unnecessary discomfort for a dog as it a simple treatment to prevent them. If untreated, fleas can also cause anemia and tapeworms.

With so many different choices to protect our pets from fleas and ticks, veterinarians still see many dogs with flea problems on a daily basis. Spot treatments are the most common and seem to be the most effective way to control fleas, ticks and mites. Avoid dog skin problems caused by fleas and ticks by using spot treatments regularly, or as directed by the manufacturer or your vet.

Canine Allergies

My Black Lab “Lady” suffered with dog skin allergies since we brought her home as a rescued puppy over 11 years ago. Over the years, I have learned that allergies can be just as difficult to pinpoint in dogs as they are in humans. . Allergies occur when the body’s immune system is weakened, which can be caused by improper or insufficient nutrition. Feeding home made organic dog food with added nutritional supplements or the top of the line organic dog food is the simplest way to determine if the allergies are caused immune defeciency. Giving a higher nutritional organic diet is what stopped my Lady’s allergies altogether. The continuous paw licking stopped completely beacause her immune system was increased, which in turn caused her allergies to be eliminated. There was also a drastic improvement is her overall health, well being and activity level.

Seasonal Allergies

If you notice your dog chewing and scratching more in the mornings after he/she comes in from outside, then it’s possible he’s/she’s sensitive to pollen, mold, ragweed or other environmental factors, just as we are. Also, allergies can include a sensitivity to dust. So, if dusting the house is considered low on your priority list, yet you notice that your dog is fine until he/she comes into the house, then it’s possible that he is sensitive to dust-mites. Environmental allergens are usually treated with anti-inflammatories or other presciption medication from you vet.

Food Allergies

Chewing the feet can be an indicator of food allergies. Although food allergies are less common in dogs, they can become more severe. I believe either feeding an all natural organic premium dog food or using recipes and making your dog’s meals will help eliminate food allergies. Don’t give a large variety to start with, and slowly introduce any new foods over a period of several weeks to see if the chewing increases or decreases. Keeping a careful watch of what your pet eats, and noting any changes in behaviour shortly after the change, makes all the difference in catching an unknown food allergy.

So What Really is The Cause?

Switching to either a premium organic dog food or making your own home made dog food should be the first course of action when trying to determine the cause of dog allergies or incessant licking and scratching. A certification of over 70% organic products used should be on the label to ensure you are buying a high quality, premium food for your dog, with the first ingredient being meat, of course. An organic certification of 95% (of which there are a few) is equal the human grade food. This is something that definitely will not harm your pet, and is the easiest and least expensive way to start figuring out what is causing the licking and allergies. Remember, just because your dog doesn’t do well on lamb doesn’t mean that he won’t do well on a chicken based food. The premium organic dog food that I buy for my Lady is specifically marked for dogs with skin allergies, and this is what I believe cured her itchy skin problem. This had been ongoing for years, with medical treatments of prednisone, antihistamines, and costly vet bills for expensive allergy testing and after all that, the diagnosis was inconclusive. The real key is to observe your dog’s patterns.

Organic Dog Biscuit

Sunday, March 29th, 2009

Eric Taylor asked:

The food you feed your dog is the single most important factor affecting his or her health.  Organic dog biscuits provide more than merely calories for your dog.  Aside from energy, healthy dog biscuits must provide appropriate amounts of protein, fats, carbohydrates, and all associated bio-available nutrients.  The quality of the ingredients used in a given pet food determines how much nutrition your dog will get from that food.  The healthiest ingredients are those that are USDA certified organic because they contain much higher levels of nutrients, such as vitamins, antioxidants, and minerals, than non-certified organic—or conventional—ingredients.  Foods containing organic ingredients therefore supply your dog with naturally occurring nutrients that are important for both the maintenance of health and proper healing after injuries.  It is a well-known fact that USDA certified organic ingredients contain significantly lower loads of pesticide residues, as well as other potentially toxic chemicals, which might otherwise accumulate during the manufacture of conventional dog biscuits and their ingredients.  Another reason the healthiest dog biscuits are USDA certified organic (as only organic certification is regulated by current US law) is that organic regulations prohibit the use of ingredients that cannot be traced to their source or that were genetically modified.  Organic certification excludes the use of inferior or otherwise questionable dog biscuit ingredients, such as by products or so-called ‘meals,’ as well as the use of potentially toxic synthetic ingredients.

Ideally, a healthy dog biscuit should contain a variety of naturally occurring nutrients, and would not contain a lot of nutritionally empty ingredients or the arbitrarily established spectrum of generally low quality synthetic vitamins and minerals that are often added as supplements to conventional pet foods and pet treats.

Dogs are carnivores by nature, and their teeth and digestive tracts attest to this fact.  Although some dogs can thrive on closely monitored and well-supplemented vegetarian diets, dog biscuits can contain a reasonable amount of animal-derived ingredients.  Many dog biscuits contain more starch and carbohydrates from grains than protein from other plant or animal sources; this can lead to health problems, as many dogs are allergic to grains.  A healthy dog biscuit should therefore contain no grains or only high-quality grains that have been processed to be suitable for a dog’s digestive system.  Although many dog biscuits are non-vegetarian and contain some sort of meat, in most cases, the animal-derived ingredients used are low quality, and might include such ill-defined components as so-called ‘animal meals’ or byproducts.

A truly healthy dog biscuit should contain certified organic ingredients because this assures that the quality of the plant- and animal-derived ingredients will be good.  It also guarantees that the ingredients are free of hormones and antibiotics.  The best dog biscuits should contain only those animal-derived ingredients from animals that were humanely raised and grown.  This assures that the animal components used are free of external toxins or the hormones that are released during a stressful life on a feedlot or just prior to slaughter, all of which may impact your dog’s health negatively.

Although dogs should also eat some plant-based foods, the plant material should be healthy, toxin-free, and accessible to your dog’s digestive system; here again, certified organic ingredients are the best choice for your dog’s food.  This means that plant ingredients should either be ground up finely or processed in other ways that allow the dog to use the nutrients contained in the plant cells.  Although many pet food manufacturers bake their dog biscuits, and this would certainly break down plant components (i.e., ‘make it more digestible’), baking is less than ideal, as it destroys most healthful nutrients.

So, to summarize, the best and healthiest dog biscuits are those that are USDA certified organic, whole food-based, and contain high quality ingredients including well-prepared high quality plant materials.

Organic Dog Food – Should you Feed Organic Food to your Pet Dog?

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

Michael Lee asked:

These days, going eco-friendly and organic is all the rage, and you can see people striving to make a change in their lifestyles and their eating habits. So why not include dog food in the organic crusade? Sales of organic dog food are going up, and this is due to the fact that pet owners who are trying to eat well also want their dogs to do the same. People are starting to think that the usual commercial dog foods aren’t the best option (especially with the dog food recall), and that organic dog food is the key to keeping their dogs healthy.

Many dog owners are convinced that organic dog food ensures better health for their pets. However, there haven’t been any studies or reports that make such a claim, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) itself also states that the main difference lies in how the food is produced and processed, not in their nutritional content.

Nevertheless, this doesn’t stop people from helping their pets adopt an organic diet, and the fact that organic dog food uses more wholesome ingredients is already a major part of its appeal.

What goes into organic dog food? The manufacturers of these meals all have their own approach to the ingredients, and they promise that their products don’t make use of growth hormones, antibiotics, and artificial flavorings. Organic dog food made out of chicken, for example, usually uses free-range chickens. Even dog treats can be manufactured using organic whole grains.

If you’re thinking about switching your dog’s diet to organic dog food, there are a few things you should consider. First is the price. Organic dog food is more expensive than regular dog food, so you should first look at the food options available and determine which one is within your budget.

You should also do your research on organic dog food manufacturers and learn more about their production process and their reputation as well.

Don’t forget to consult your veterinarian first before making the switch. Making the change to organic dog food isn’t applauded by all veterinarians, so it’s best to find out from your vet how this change can affect your dog.

Organic dog food has many positive points, but you shouldn’t forget to look at the other side of it as well. It may turn out that your dog is most suited to what he currently eats, so do your research first and don’t rush him into a complete diet overhaul.

Jane Dinunzio asked:

anic Dry Dog Food

The best, ultra premium organic dog food is Karma Organic Dry Dog Food, as they use over 95% organic ingredients in their dry dog kibble. Although they do not have a line of canned dog food, and just sell Karma Organic Dry Dog Food, it is the best choice if you want to eliminate chemicals, artificial preservatives, unnecessary additives, meat that is not fit for consumption, unhealthy fillers and in some cheap brands - road kill.

Karma Organic Dry Dog Food is the only dog food manufacturing company that can boast the over 95% organic ingredients. It also contains 18 certified organic ingredients and is made with organic whole fruits and vegetables - not dried. And just to add the perfect touch to their all natural organic environmentally friendly philosophy, they use packaging made with 100% recyclable material. Did you know that 95% organic ingredients are considered human grade food?

They provide 100% complete nutrition, and the ingredients list starts with number one being Organic Free Range Chicken, and continues like a menu in a health food restaurant. Changing your dog from the cheap grocery store brand to this highly organic dog food can be nothing but good, and will eliminate many of the health problems, allergies and illnesses caused by the food containing fillers, pesticides, herbicides, synthetic fertilizers, sewage sludge, GMO grains and all the nasty artificial preservatives and additives.

Although this is pricier than most, money saved by reducing health problems, and just the fact that you will be extending your dogs life seem to be worth the extra few dollars.

Newman’s Own Organics Pet Food

This pet food has more than 70% of all ingredients being organic. They use human grade all natural chicken and organic brown rice, and it is supplemented with high levels of antioxidants, Ester-C and probiotics.

Newman’s Own Organics pet foods do not use herbicides, pesticides or artificial fertilizers and is not irradiated, and do not contain chemical additives or preservatives. The ingredients are handled according to strict organic standards.

Newman’s Own Organics come in a variety of sizes of dry dog and cat food, and they also offer canned dog and cat food, as well as Newman’s Own Organics Dog Treats.

The 30% of ingredients that are non organic are still high grade ingredients that are completely safe, nutritious, all natural, and free of unnecessary fillers or harmful additives.

Natural Planet Organics Dry Dog Food

Natural Planet Organics does not list the percentage of organic to non organic ingredients, but its main ingredients are organic, and the rest are all natural.

Natural Planet Organics is certified organic dog food and classified by the company as Ultra Premium. Organic free range chicken is the first ingredient listed.

They also use organic grains, organic vegetables and organic fruits.

Additionally natural antioxidants are added, along with pre and probiotics, and an excellent combination of important supplemental vitamins and minerals for optimum health. Also glucosamine and chondroitin and high levels of Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids and taurine, which are essential, are also included.

You will find there are no harmful preservatives, added chemicals or fillers, that are invariably found listed as ingredients of lesser quality brand kibble. The ingredient list is easily read, and there are no complex chemically sounding words. I always believe if I can’t pronounce it, I wouldn’t want to eat it. This also goes for my pets, and this organic food meets “my rule.”

This organic food is offered as dry kibble only, for dogs and cats, and well worth the few extra dollars it may cost over less natural dog food.

Peace of mind, and confidence that you are giving your pet the best food available on the market today comes when you choose any of the above three all natural, certified organic dog foods. You will not have to worry about compromising your pet’s health, just as you don’t compromise your own family. Advantages of Using Organic Dog Shampoo

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

A. Nutt asked:

It seems to go without saying that people who tend to be very planet conscience are also big animal lovers. Why wouldn’t they be? Planetary conservation is dependent on the survival of all animal species, not just the human one.

In conjunction with this green living ideology, these loving pet parents should start to think in term of purchasing eco friendly products for their animals, especially dogs.

While cats have their own cleaning system, namely themselves, dogs will need more care to maintain their skin and coats. For this reason, earth conscious dog owners should start buying organic dog shampoo as well as eco friendly toys and treats

Now, before you shrug and say that your animal has been doing just find without such products, you need to consider the very real and multifaceted advantages if using an organic dog shampoo.

Cruelty free

A manufacturer of an organic product for dogs is going to take great pains to ensure that the product is cruelty free. This is not only ethically sound, it makes good business sense.

How stupid would it be to market an item made for an eco friendly, potentially Vegan customer base knowing that animals were harmed during product testing?

That said, just because a dog shampoo states it is organic, doesn’t make it so. Check the ingredients to see if this is indeed the case. If the company is shown to place more chemical based ingredients on their shampoo, it isn’t all natural and shouldn’t be used.

When in doubt, do research on the company in question. If the merchandise is truly organically grown, more than likely it will in turn, be cruelty free.

Absence of chemicals, dyes and irritants

Many pet owners who use over the counter dog shampoos find that their dogs tend to scratch a lot. This is because most common shampoos contain irritants and ingredients that can make your dogs skin very dry.

In turn, the dog scratches, tearing out their hair and harming their coat.

Canines may even have the misfortune of developing a rash that makes their hair fall out in patches.

Caring owners will take their dog to a vet, but medicine will be ineffective if the allergic reaction is due to harsh chemicals from mainstream shampoo.

All natural pet shampoos formulated for dogs rarely have these side effects. This is because organic materials haven’t been subjected to synthetic pesticides or the potent carcinogenic materials found in most commercial fertilizers.

This will reduce the likelihood of allergies or rashes associated with the chemicals commonly found in most grooming products.

Safe for human caregivers and the environment

Synthetic elements in regular dog shampoos can be extremely harmful to the pet parent as well as to their dog.

One recent study links pyrenthrins, a substance found in most dog shampoos, with autism. The jury is still out, but research has show that women who were pregnant and used products with pyrenthrins in them were more likely to have a child with autism than woman who did not.

Also, since human skin is less resistant to irritants than the skin of a dog, they are more likely to be harmed by dangerous chemicals far more rapidly.

Using organic dog shampoo with biodegradable materials eliminates the potential harm to human beings and doggies and observes conservation efforts simultaneously.

Final word

Interested consumers will be able to easily locate organic dog shampoo at a health food supermarket or via an online, eco friendly pet store.

Just think, the purchase of an all natural shampoo will protect your treasured pet’s coat and make his skin healthy. This fact alone will make the hunt for an organic grooming product all the more worthwhile!
