Natural Balanced Dog Food

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

Eric Taylor asked:

When you shop for natural balanced dog food, what should you look for when choosing the best product for your canine friend?  In general, the best natural dog foods achieve balance through the food ingredients they contain.  However, you need to know what to search for before you’re able to find truly natural and healthy options for your pet.  Most dog foods are marketed as ‘nutritionally balanced’ or ‘nutritionally complete,’ indicating that the constituent food ingredients have been supplemented with nutrients at the levels recommended by the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO), which is essentially a pet food industry regulated entity.   Although these recommended nutrient levels are based on individual research data collected by the National Research Council (NRC), these data cannot possibly reflect the actual needs of every pet, as even identical twins may exhibit metabolic differences based on environmental factors alone.  How can laboratory-based nutritional studies, or even laboratory-based feeding studies, compare to real life scenarios if even the qualities of the water supplied to the animals differs from lab to lab and home to home?  Moreover, most laboratory studies are conducted with ‘purified’ diets, which are a far cry from present-day commercial dog foods.   As well, the quality of nutrients added to attain the AAFCO established levels to allow dog foods to be marketed as ‘complete’ or ‘balanced’ are often of such low quality that they may actually pose risks to, rather than support, your dog’s health.  Many of these supplements are manufactured in China, where manufacturers may have low quality assurance and are often subject to little oversight.

A natural balanced dog food is composed of real food ingredients that supply the nutrients that your dog requires to maintain good health—just as nature intended.  Of course, supplementation with nutrients often becomes necessary when low-quality food ingredients are used, as is often the case in most so-called ‘balanced dog foods.’  Both non-certified and feed-quality ingredients alike contain low levels of nutrients, as well as a variety of toxic chemicals from agricultural and manufacturing processes.  Not surprisingly, pet food manufacturers balance these ingredients with added nutrients to provide at least some nutrition for your dog.  Moreover, the long shelf lives of most balanced pet foods—designed to accommodate consumer convenience—require the addition of preservatives, which in the best case are ‘natural’ (albeit often derived from cheap, genetically modified plant materials with high pesticide and other chemical residues).  In general, the bioavailability of all these added nutrients may be a far cry from optimal, as many of the supplemental vitamins and minerals may be not bioavailable.  Bioavailability of added nutrients is especially low in cases where pet foods or their ingredients have been treated with high heat, which can destroy most vitamins and all enzymes, and may denature all amino acids.

A true natural balanced dog food contains ingredients that are rich in the nutrients your dog requires.  High quality, organic, humanely raised animal-derived ingredients and properly grown, certified organic plant material are much richer in minerals, vitamins, antioxidants, essential fatty acids, and other nutrients than conventional (and significantly less expensive) ingredients.  Although natural balanced dog foods are necessarily more expensive than most conventional dog foods, they are unquestionably healthier for your dog.

Feeding your dog natural balanced dog foods gives you the unique opportunity to provide real food for your dog and reserve supplementation—with high quality nutritional supplements that are truly healthful and bioavailable—for times when such supplementation is required (i.e., after injury, during pregnancy, or to mitigate the effects of particular breed-associated chronic diseases that may occur in older dogs).  Ideally, natural balanced dog foods are either fresh or frozen, but may also be dehydrated for convenience.  But be careful: not all dehydrated natural balanced dog foods are created equal!  Even dog foods labeled ‘natural’ and ‘balanced’ may contain otherwise good quality ingredients that have been subjected to high heat before being mixed with other, lower quality, ingredients and dehydrated.  Given current laws governing the pet food industry, you, as your dog’s true guardian, must do your homework before serving him or her a natural balanced dog food!

Treat your Pet at an Austin Dog Boutique

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

Dana Gibbson asked:

People all over the world treat their dog like another member of their family so it only makes sense that they will want to buy products that are made just for them. Everyone knows someone who treats their dog like they are one of their children, even going as far as to spoil them. Dog boutiques are the perfect place for dog lovers to find everything they need to pamper their best friend. In the Austin area these places seem to be popping up everywhere.

The great thing about dog boutiques is that they offer a massive variety or products that were made especially for the special dog in your life. When you go in to one of these establishments you will be amazed at the amount of products that are available. These items include everything from beautifully decorated clothing and collars, as well as delicious chewing meats and organic dog treats.

These dog treats and biscuits are by far the most enjoyable products that are sold at Austin dog boutiques. You can purchase different types of meat sticks and jerky for your dog, as well as multiple flavors of biscuits and organic treats. There are also dental dog treats that keep your dogs breath fresh while helping to keep their teeth and gums healthy. There isn’t a more enjoyable way to treat your dog while keeping them fit.

Likely on of the most commonly purchased dog accessories from Austin area dog boutiques is the collar. These come in a huge range of materials and designs. You can find the traditional leather collars and even fancy diamond studded collars for the spoiled dog in your life. These are so popular that you can find dog boutiques that will even personalize your dogs with embroidery or special designs that make it truly one of a kind.

Human Grade Dog Food Is Better For Your Pet

Friday, March 20th, 2009

Thomas Kearl asked:

Back a few decades ago, pet owners did not pay much attention to their dog’s dietary needs and fed them whatever kind of dog food was the most affordable. Human grade dog food was almost unheard of, unless it referred to feeding dogs what was left over as table scraps at mealtime. Nobody would consider eating the kinds of ingredients found in commercially made dog food. But today there are many sources of excellent dog food that are made with ingredients we all recognize as suitable for humans, such as red potatoes, carrots, and even apples.

Dog food in the 1950s and 1960s, for example, was typically manufactured using the by-products or waste left over from processing animals for human consumption. When cattle or pigs were processed, for example, whatever parts of the animal were not suited for humans might end up in dog food. But one of the main sources of meat in dog foods in those days was horses. Horsemeat was often derived from sick animals, because healthy horses would usually be worth more alive and therefore they escaped the slaughterhouse. So when old horses with poor health or younger diseased horses had to be killed, many of them wound up in dog food processing plants.

Today, fortunately, the standards for dog food have risen significantly. It is possible, for instance, to buy both dry and canned dog foods that are made from many superior ingredients including nutritious foods like brown rice, trout, bison, and chicken. Not only do dogs enjoy these kinds of food better because of the taste, but pet owners also enjoy the fact they generally have a much better odor than cheaper kinds of dog food made from low class ingredients. Treat your dog to a better grade of food – with ingredients fit for people – and your canine will have a better chance to live a much happier, healthier, and longer life.

What Can Hypoallergenic Dog Food Really Do?

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

Madeleine Innocent asked:

Allergies abound in today’s health arena, for dogs as well as humans. There are a various causes for this, but in my opinion, there is only one maintaining cause, ie the reason it keeps going.

As a rule, allergies are showing that the sufferer has a very weak immune system. When you are considering feeding your dog a hypoallergenic dog food, you know that his immune system is at rock bottom.

I’m not going to address the possible causes here, but I am going to look at bringing your dog’s immune system up, so that he is no longer so sensitive.

Food is consumed every day. So food has the biggest impact on your dog’s health. Whatever the label may say, if you’re feeding your dog a commercial hypoallergenic dog food, then you’re contributing to his discomfort and ill health.

All commercial pet foods are basically the same:

over cooked, destroying vital nutrients use of very low quality food, such as dead animals and high fat use of any cheap filler to bulk it out use of highly toxic preservatives - how else do you keep ‘meat’ products indefinitely, at room temperature

Each one of these aspects of commercial dog food will undermine your dog’s immune system. Bringing them all together ensures he can’t fight off any health issue that comes his way.

The best way to help bring up your dog’s immune system is to feed him as his ancestors fed - with raw meat and bones.

I’m not saying that by feeding your dog as nature intended he will necessarily completely recover from his allergies. But he’ll do a whole lot better than he will by feeding him a commercial hypoallergenic dog food.

There is no true holistic vet or animal therapist who doesn’t adhere to this policy.

Once you have his diet addressed and he’s been on it for enough time to see what it alone can cure, then it’s time to consider treatment.

Being a natural therapist myself (a homeopath), of course I’m biased! But I get a lot of animals come to me who vets haven’t been able to help. Once I get the dog on the natural diet, then the homoeopathic remedy of choice finishes the problem off. Without the diet, the remedy can only palliate.

What I’m really saying is that there is no such thing as hypoallergenic dog food. There is only good, healthy dog food and unhealthy dog food. You will never address a problem if you don’t look at the cause (which homeopathy does so well) and you don’t contribute to it.

Suppose you have a riot in the city (allergies). You can send in the police and the riot will die down (allergies seem to clear up). But underneath the unrest continues (the cause of the allergies hasn’t been cured), and the real reasons are left untouched, only to fester into a much worse state (now hypoallergenic). Homeopathy is akin to finding the cause of the riots and disturbances and dealing with those in a peaceful and constructive way. That is the true nature of cure. (See afternote.)

So don’t be taken in by the pretty words and smiling actors on a packet of commercial hypoallergenic dog food. It will do nothing to bring your dog’s immune system back up, which is the only way to help cure his sensitivities.

I consider there is only one type of healthy dog food, only one type which help restore even the sickest dog’s immune system. And that’s the one based on the natural diet of wild dogs.

Homemade Dog Food, Your Hunting Dog Will Love You

Friday, March 6th, 2009
healthy dog food
Lizzie Novotny asked:

My two Vizsla hunting dogs get homemade dog food twice each day. I mix an adjusted amount with good quality dry kibble.

Homemade dog food can be better than some commercial products. We don’t realize what’s in the food we give our pets. Always inspect the ingredients.

Commercial dog foods can contain preservatives, and are altered by chemical processes that can be unhealthy for dogs. They can also contain processed unknown animal products and fillers that do nothing to contribute to your pet’s health.

To avoid your dogs ingesting unknown dog food ingredients, make your own. Control not only the content, but the quality as well.

Reasons To Consider A Homemade Dog Food

- dog has allergies to food

- persistent skin problems

- gastrointestinal upsets including diarrhea or constipation

- competes in sporting events or working stock and needs strength for endurance

- control of quality and freshness

- nothing processed so food retains all the vitamins, antioxidants and enzymes

Observe your dog to see he is getting his required dog food nutrition.

- shiny coat, illustrious feel

- sparkling eyes

- alert, good energy and activity

- maintain weight without getting fat

- stool firm and consistent

An appropriately balanced dog food recipe contains roughly 40% meat, 30% starch and 30% vegetables.

1. Meat: Any type can be included. Organ meat, such as liver, is particularly healthy for dogs. Bones should be removed as they are a choking hazard. Cook the meat - uncooked meat can contain unhealthy bacteria and possibly parasites.

2. Starch: Most forms are okay - cooked pasta, potatoes, and rice are common choices for homemade dog food.

3. Vegetables: Most types can be used. Do not use onions as they can be toxic. Cook the vegetables - raw veggies can pose a choking hazard.

Recipe For Quick Adult Homemade Dog Food

This recipe will feed a 50 pound adult dog for one day. If your dog in smaller or larger then the 50 pounds, adjust the amount of ingredients. You can cook enough for many days, divide accordingly and freeze the rest. This food has No preservatives, so refrigerate the fresh food for 3 days maximum. The human vitamin supplement Theragran-M Advanced and calcium carbonate (example: Tums) can be found in any pharmacy.

- 5 oz. dark meat chicken or turkey beef or fish

- 2 1/8 cups cooked brown rice

- 1 tsp. corn oil

- 1/2 tsp. salt

- 2 pills Theragran-M Advanced (crushed)

- 2100 milligrams calcium carbonate (crushed)

Directions:

1. Cook rice until done.

2. Bake your meat, poultry, or fish choice 325 degrees for 30 minutes.

3. Crush human vitamins and “Tums”.

4. Mix all ingredients.

Pay attention to your dog’s response to the new dog food recipes you use. There may be items they refuse to eat or have reactions to a particular food. Try something else in their place, such as substitute chicken for turkey or rice for potatoes. Be aware for changes in your dog’s behavior, especially things such as excessive scratching. This could indicate an allergy to one of the foods you are using.

Homemade dog food recipes generally cause fewer allergic reactions than commercial brands. Plus, by making dog food recipes at home, you can control the proportion of different ingredients. This can be very important to working and sporting breeds that may require more nutrients for their active lifestyles.

While in the kitchen, why not whip up some dog biscuits. Recipes can be found on the Internet, or try your library. Here is an easy dog biscuit recipe, use it for training or a treat. I have never met a dog who didn’t love his cheese!

Any Cheese Biscuits

- 1 cup all purpose flour

- 1 cup whole wheat flour

- 1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar, Swiss, mozzarella, or any cheese in the fridge)… dogs Love any type of cheese!

- 2 tbsp. butter

- 3/4 cup milk, lowfat

- grated parmesan for topping (if you have it on hand)

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

2. Mix all flours and cheese together in a food processor (or by hand, mix well).

3. Add softened butter and milk, mix well.

4. Roll out on a surface to 1/4 to 1/2 inch thickness.

5. Cut into shapes, squares is fine.

6. Place on greased baking surface.

7. Bake for 15 to 29 minutes or until golden brown.

8. Cool and store in refrigerator.

Always check with your Veterinarian before making any changes to your dog’s diet. For any type of dog, homemade dog food is a good choice to ensure they live a long, happy, and healthy life.
