Pet Diseases and Diet

Janine Carter asked:

If you are feeding your dog store bought food that is produced by the large manufacturing companies, your pet may face some health problems. Some large manufacturers are using products in their food that has been removed from human foods. Find out what you are feeding your dog or cat.

Like most of the population, you would think that dog and cat food manufacturers are paying close attention to a healthy formula for your pets’ good health and wellbeing. It may surprise you to know that not all manufacturers do, and that some use discarded animal parts that can actually harm your dog.

Not long ago, pet owners were shocked to find out that the food they were feeding their dogs had toxic ingredients and were causing many deaths in the pet world. Healthy dogs were fed this store-bought dog food that was well trusted by the unsuspecting public. Federal testing of some of the cat and dog food and the wheat gluten used in their production turned up the chemical melamine, which can be toxic in high doses. Gluten brings elasticity and chewiness to baked products, but in this case was toxic.

Know what’s in your pets food. Make sure to always read the labels. Watch for by-products, which can contain diseased and contaminated slaughterhouse meats. Healthy dogs and cats can have their lives shortened by what they are eating every day. Also, meat from animals that have been drugged and chemical preservatives are also dangerous.

If at all possible, feed your pet all natural dog foods that have not been on the shelf for a long period of time. Food should be manufactured in smaller quantities to allow freshness. Food that has been sitting in a store for a year will not have the same quantities of nutrition it did when fresh. The longer the food sets the less nutrition.

A healthy dog should have a life expectancy of twenty years or more, yet most only survive ten to fifteen years. Good nutrition is key to ensure your dog lives out his full life and is not taken early by preventable diseases and bad diet.

Many things can be caused from improper nutrition such as, Allergies, Arthritis, Bladder problems, Cancer, Dental problems, Diarrhea, Diabetes, Digestive problems, Kidney problems, Liver problems and Obesity. Obesity can be caused by too much sugar and carbohydrates that are found in store-bought dog foods.

In the end, buy a quality dog food. All natural human grade food with no preservatives added. An Internet search can quickly find you the best natural food for your pets. In doing so you will increase their lives and their happiness.

Best Dog Food - Are You Sure?

Sunday, June 7th, 2009

Lori Matthews asked:

When it comes to taking care of your pet dog, it is important to make sure that you are paying attention to the dog food you give him/her. All dog food is not created equal. Instead of just going with the cheapest or the first brand you see on the store shelves, it is important to make sure that you are getting the best for the dog. There are a lot of dog foods out there that are not as good for pets as they could or should be. It is vital to make sure that the treats and supplements that are being bought for the dog are just as healthy.

The first thing that you will want to take into consideration when looking at buying dog food is the list of ingredients. If corn, wheat, or soy is the first ingredient listed then you will want to go with a different kind of food or a different brand altogether. This is because the first ingredient that is listed is the ingredient that makes up most of the food. Corn, wheat, and soy should never be the main ingredient in your dog’s diet. The best thing to be listed as the main ingredient in the dog food is that of protein from an animal source. A healthier choice is, chicken meal as to “poultry” meal

You will need to avoid things such as artificial flavors or preservatives. Preservatives such as BHA, BHT, and Ethoxyquin have been proven to be extremely harmful to dogs when used over a long period of time. When preservatives are needed, natural sources such as vitamins are the best things to use. Even though this means that you will have to spend a little extra time in the research of your dog food label, it is well worth it for the health of your dog.

Also make sure that you know just how exactly the food is manufactured, where it is manufactured, and whether or not the company has high quality control procedures. Just as making sure the ingredients are proper for your dog, it is important to make sure that where the food is being made and how it is being made is beneficial to your dog as well. You will also want to make sure that you are double-checking to make sure whether there have ever been any recalls on the brand of dog food that you are looking at in order to make sure that your pet is completely safe.

Since it is important to make sure that you are caring for your dog just as you would a child, you want to make sure that you are feeding it the best food possible. The healthier the food is that the dog is eating the better its life will be. A long healthy life is the result of a well balanced diet and exercise routine. The immune system of a dog needs the right food in order to fight off free radicals that will come naturally with age. And since your dog ages much faster than a human, there is no better time than now to start making sure that your dog receives the best dog food possible.

Is Your Store-bought Food Hurting Your Dog?

Saturday, June 6th, 2009

Jonathan Reizovic asked:

If you are a dog owner, you know the biggest concerns we face are the health and happiness of our dogs. They are man’s best friend so we want nothing, but the best for them. The question is what is best for them? We know how to treat them with love and affection, but what about their diets?

It seems that many of us have been misled by the big “caring” pet food corporations out there. They know we want the best for our pets, and promise they are providing this, but the fact of the matter is: THEY’RE NOT. As many of you already know, these corporations were getting their ingredients from China, which turned out to be harmful to our pets. This led to the huge recall that lasted for weeks, if not months. They say everything is under control, but what is preventing this from happening again?

The answer is not buying from these companies any more, and giving our pets what they really need: Natural Holistic Pet Food. This can be accomplished by two methods. You can make the all natural pet food yourself or you can purchase it from an honest online supplier.

Do to the fact that making all natural pet food for my dog is too time consuming for my lifestyle, I have opted to purchase from an online supplier. The company I chose to buy from is Flint River Ranch. Unlike these huge corporations that mass produce their food, Flint River Ranch’s food is never “warehoused” or left for weeks (or months) to sit on a pet store shelf - as it is delivered to their distribution centers and prepped for shipping within two days of manufacture.

Another great thing about Flint River Ranch is that your order, no matter how big or small, is shipped to your door for free, and orders over 20 lbs. are shipped in easy-to-manage bags of no more than 20 pounds, enabling easy storage and feeding of their food. Lastly, I will get to their prices. Being completely honest, their prices are higher than your average store-bought pet food. However, because Flint River Ranch’s pet foods do not contain wasted fillers, pets need 20%-25% less than comparable pet foods in order to maintain their ideal weight. This leads to you getting more servings per bag than traditional store-bought food, and leaves you paying about the same to a bit more than store-bought, but in my opinion it is worth it. You get an all natural holistic pet food that is healthy for your dog, delivered to your door for free, and if you are not completely satisfied within 30 days you can return the bag, even if it is empty for a full refund.

To conclude, traditional store-bought pet foods have promised us the best for our pets, yet they failed to come through. They tried to lower production costs and ended up hurting many peoples’ pets. Fortunately, my dog has not been affected, but we should not stand for this anymore. So whether you decide to make your own all natural holistic pet food for your dog or you buy it from an honest online supplier, such as Flint River Ranch, I advise you to make the switch for your best friend.

Pet Store - Are You Able To Get Your Beloved Pets Need

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

Ske Chay asked:

What happens when you run out of pet food in the middle of the day? The quickest way is to dash to the nearest pet store and replenish your pet supplies, as most online orders are not delivered immediately.

It requires a lot of energy and time to provide the best pet care to our animals. The pet store is the most convenient place to purchase all the pet supplies for your beloved pets, as they will usually have stocks on the products or services that are in high demand or most commonly bought by customers.

In a large city or big town, there should be dozens of pet stores situated near every residential area. You should look for a store that keeps their goods in a neat and hygienic manner. Perishable products such as food or anything with a shelf date should be sold within the validity date.

In addition, an up-market store should have the latest products that may help pet owners minimize on the amount of time spent on pet care.

Firstly, there is a need to groom your pet under a daily, bi-weekly or weekly schedule, as the activity is necessary to keep the animal’s coat healthy and shiny. Grooming is also essential, as it will also eradicate fleas and other parasites. The pet store should have hygiene and grooming products such as shampoos, skin lotions, bathing foams, deodorizers as well as a good range of grooming tools like nail clippers/files, rakes, combs and brushes. It should also have products on dental care and commonly used medications.

Other useful innovations that can be found in an up-market store are the automatic feeders and watering gadgets. These products give your pets access to food and water whenever there is a need, without the owner’s presence to attend to their meals. In addition to convenience, automated feeders build in the control of releasing food to animals with dietary needs. As animals usually tend to dehydrate more quickly, it is important to have water readily available to them.

There should also be some varieties of traveling aids such as specially designed harness, car seats and soft cages in the pet store. Pet owners can buy these aids when traveling with their pets in cars. If you choose to bring your pet out in a bicycle, there should be a range of baskets with different safety and security features available in the store.

Most of the pet store will usually stock up a variety of leads and collars for dogs or puppies. In addition to holding your pet’s registration tags, collars also give the animal a unique identity whereas the leads can be belt around your waist as you jog or stroll with your pet. You can buy a pocket pouch from the store to carry your pet if is a small animal like the Chihuahua. A muzzle will most likely be necessary if your pet is a large or dangerous dog, especially on occasions when humans need to be kept safe.

You should be able to find a good range of bedding materials in a variety of sizes and styles in the pet store. These will probably include kennels and mats for dogs, basket and cushion products for cats, cages for the birds and rodents as well as aquariums for fishes and tortoises. Rugs and blankets are also needed to keep your pets warm during cold weathers. These accommodations will ensure that your pets are able to rest comfortably.

In addition, you should be able to buy secure enclosures such as safety pet fences or cat fences at the store. These are soft wire mesh enclosures that can be placed in backyards or on balconies. Such blocking enclosures will keep your pet safe and prevent them from wandering off while having a stretch of exercises outdoors.

Finally yet importantly, your pet will enjoy the endless list of toys sold in the pet store. These may include balls, Frisbees and bones for dogs, scratching posts and tunnels for cats, mirrors for birds as well as racing tracks for rodents.

You may even find more pampering products, unusual toys, specialty clothing and other ‘hidden treasures’ when searching through the bigger pet store(s). A trip there will bring you and your pets plenty of joy and fun together.

Use These Simple Guidelines to Choose the Best All Natural Dog Foods

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

Sherrie Chastain asked:

Because dog foods are bought by people, dog food suppliers market to the ideas dog owners have about their dogs likes. This explains why dog foods come in different shapes and colors, with or without gravy, dry or moist, etc. Dogs do not need any of these things for the best all natural dog foods. Isn’t it interesting that pet owners spend around $13 billion annually for pet food which the majority of these dog foods are not all natural dog foods that give your dog optimum health.

Consumers Digest reported several years ago, “Few foods are so liberally laced with artificial flavors as pet foods” they also quoted sources that basically said that the only way they can get pets to eat the poor quality food is by adding phony flavors.

Would you choose artificial, poor quality for ingredients in your dog foods or would you rather choose dog foods that are all natural dog foods for your dog?

A carnivore’s system is designed to eat raw meat, one animal at a time. Your dog should digest its meal and be eliminated before any putrefaction begins. A dog’s digestive system is highly acidic, or at least it should be. Only raw meat stimulates a highly acidic system that is designed to kill unfriendly bacteria.

Ingredients in the Best All Natural Dog Foods

You will find the best all natural dog foods consist of approximately 75% organic, all natural raw meat. This can consist of beef, whole chicken or turkey wings, necks and backs as long as they are raw and fresh. When bones are old or cooked they become brittle and splinter.

The best all natural dog foods are also around 25% vegetables. This does not mean give your dog a whole, raw carrot. In the wild your dog would get these vegetable requirements from the predigested vegetables in the animal’s stomach and intestines. You can add organic vegetables to your all natural dog foods by grating them, chopping finely (like what you would find in a rabbit’s stomach) or run through a blender, food chopper or food processor.

In the wild a dog would get the water they needed from their prey, so the all natural dog foods you give your dog should be the consistency of a thick stew. The moisture content of dog foods also has an effect on maintaining healthy kidneys and bladder in your dog. Many pet owners report their dog cutting down on water consumption when being fed these types of all natural dog foods.

Most of the minerals must come in the form of supplementation today. Calcium is very important in the best all natural dog foods. Bone meal is not an acceptable source of calcium for your all natural dog foods because bones store toxins and heavy metals like lead or even mad cow disease. The other reason is the calcium to phosphorous ratio. Pets need a 2:1 ratio between calcium and phosphorus. That is, for every 2 parts of calcium in the food, there should be 1 part phosphorus. As an example, if the food contains 2 grams of calcium, the food should contain 1 gram of phosphorus. Meat is naturally low in calcium and high in phosphorus. Bone meal is not only a source of calcium, but bone meal is also a source of phosphorus, so using bone meal reverses the 2:1 ratio so that perhaps your dog’s body has a 1:3 ratio or 1 part calcium to 3 parts phosphorus. This imbalance could cause your dog health problems.

Finely ground raw egg shells are the best choice for calcium supplementation in the best all natural dog foods. They contain virtually no phosphorus and are extremely high in calcium plus they are affordable and lightweight. The best all natural dog foods will use approximately 1 tsp. finely ground raw egg shells or about 8 large eggs for every pound of meat. Raw eggs are an excellent source of meat and affordable.

Digestive enzyme supplementation are also a good ingredient in the best all natural dog foods. The four most commonly used enzymes in the best all natural dog foods are amylase that helps with the digestion of carbohydrates, protease which helps with the digestion of protein, lipase that helps with the digestion of fats and cellulase for the digestion of vegetables.

Nutritive herbs provide a blend of vital nutrients that are essential in the best all natural dog foods. Alfalfa which is an Arabic word meaning “mother of all foods, dandelion leaf, nettle, and kelp are ingredients in the best all natural dog foods. These herbs can be found in various green food powder supplements from health food stores.

The combination of these herbs in the best all natural dog foods provide such nutrients as biotin, bioflavanoids, calcium, magnesium, folic acid, iodine, iron, potassium, linolenic acid, niacin, potash, sulfur, zinc, vitamins A, B1, B2, B6, B12, C and E. These herbs also aid in the assimilation of protein, fats and carbohydrates plus are an excellent blood purifier. They also aid the body to help detoxify the liver, clean the colon and keep the thyroid working.

Using these simple guidelines you can choose which are the best all natural dog foods to buy or how to make the best all natural dog foods available so your dog can enjoy optimum health.

What Can You Feed Your Dog Safely?

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

Jeff Clare asked:

Since the first time one of our pre-historic ancestors tossed a scrap of meat at a wolf, dogs have been living off the leftovers from their master’s table. While this is a common practice in many parts of the world, it isn’t the best nutrition for the dog. As with humans, dogs also require a well-balanced meal, be that in the form of fresh foods or packaged, store-bought food. Either way, it’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with what constitutes a healthy diet for your dog.

Water is probably the most vital yet often overlooked part of a dog’s diet. A bowl of clean water should be available to a dog at all times, so that it can drink whenever it gets thirsty. If you’ve been feeding your dog foods that are unusually salty, keep a close eye on their water bowl, as your pet will want more water (and need to *** afterwards) once they’re done with the salty food.

Meat provides many things for the naturally-carnivorous dog (though, ideally, only about half their diet consists of meat), including proteins and fats. Though cooking is good for all meats fed to a dog, only pork and rabbit really need to be cooked. Processed and heavily spiced or salted meats, such as beef jerky, salami, or pork rinds, aren’t as easy on a dog’s digestive system as they are on a human’s digestive system.

Dogs will also gladly eat eggs and fish, though a few words must be said about both first. Fish should be thoroughly deboned, lest a stray fish rib pierce a dog’s windpipe, and it should always be cooked. Dogs love eggs, and they don’t know the difference between brown eggs and blood spots and ordinary eggs, so you can save some money by buying cheaper eggs.

Grains are another good food for a dog, especially since grains offer all the carbohydrates they might need. Breads, rice, and cereals are all good grains, though all grains should be cooked before you feed them to a dog. However, as important as grains are, they shouldn’t be more than half of a dog’s diet.

Vegetables are a perfectly fine addition to a dog’s diet, though foods like peas and beans should be avoided. Carrots, lettuce, celery, potatoes, and potato skins are fine for a dog to eat. Cooking vegetables is purely optional, though the less time spent cooking the better for your dog, at least in terms of nutrition.

Cheese and dairy products are another good bet, as they provide a healthy amount of proteins and a larger dose of calcium for older dogs. However, not all dogs will appreciate cheese, so know if your dog in particular enjoys it. Dogs can also consume cow’s milk in their diet, though newborn pups shouldn’t drink cows milk. Further, too much milk in a dog’s diet (save for newborn pups), will leave them with a case of diarrhea.

Dogs can become fat and out of shape or undernourished just like their owners. When deciding how much food to give your dog, the general formula is an ounce of food for every pound of the dog’s weight. Another factor to take into consideration would be how active your dog is. If he’s working herding cattle or sheep all day, as opposed to lounging around a penthouse apartment with not much to do, you will have to adjust the amounts of food appropriately.

Essential Guide to Source Your New Healthy & Illness-free Pug

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009

Ken Tan asked:

NEWS TO PUG LOVERS…

If you are looking for sure-fire ways to owning a healthy and illness-free pug, then this may be the most important message you’ve ever read…

You could try any preventative measures or feed your pug with the best available home-cooked food, but if genetically your pug is “unfit” or “unhealthy”, then there isn’t much that you could do to improve its health condition. Most likely you would have bought your pug from certain unscrupulous breeders, who had neither knowledge nor any concerns on breeding healthy pug puppies for sale. To avoid getting yourself into this situation, there are four different ways you could source for your new pug. They are as follows:

1. Pugs from Reputable Pug Breeders

The safest and best place to finding a pug is from reputable pug breeders Reputable pug breeders will adhere to the breeding standards, and have vast experience in breeding and choosing their own stocks. The responsible breeders will ensure that the new born pug puppies are in “tip-top” condition, free from any hereditary diseases.

They will generally not breed any other pugs which were not as good, or were previously diagnosed with hereditary health problems. These problems could easily pass on to the next generation. Some breeders even guarantee returns, if you find that it is unsuitable for yourself in any way.

The best way to locate reputable and reliable pug breeders is through recommendations from other pug owners. Perhaps the next time while you are strolling around the park and you happen to meet owners walking their pugs, you might want to enquire from them. Remember to enquire about her own pug’s health and condition, and not just take his or her recommendation for granted. Of course, if he or she is also a victim of those unscrupulous pug breeders, then you would be better off to avoid from this particular pug breeder.

Be inquisitive and do hear the person out, but be sure to evaluate every one of his or her responses with due care before taking up her recommendation.

2. Pugs from Rescue Centres (Eg. SPCA or rescued group)

This is a good source for you to adopt a new pet with considerably lower cost. Compared to adopting a new pug from reputable pug breeders, you’ll probably expect a slight compromise in terms of the quality of the pug’s genes from this source.

You might want to enquire why the pugs were rescued, and where they came from. There are many reasons why owners give up their pugs. Some of the common reasons include:

(a) owners are allergic to pugs;

(b) owners passed away;

(c) accidental or unplanned birth;

(d) high cost of maintenance of pugs (such as high vet bills)

(e) owner’s migration; and

(f) problematic behaviours with pugs and many others.

However, rest assured that pugs from rescue centres will normally be neutered and vaccinated. Most of the time, they will also be willing to let you know all the necessary information to the best of their abilities.

3. Pugs from Home-Breeders

Home-breeders are basically pug owners who breed their pugs from home. This may still be an acceptable option for you, if you happen to know the pug owners. Most home-breeders do not have any knowledge of pugs’ genetics and therefore, unable to produce truly nice pugs generation after generation. More so, you won’t expect home-breeders to spend money on health test to check for any hereditary defects, though this could be arranged between you and home-breeders.

4. Pugs from Pet Stores

Pugs from pet stores are usually pug puppies from puppy mills or home-breeders.

Health conditions of pugs from puppy mills are probably the worst that you could expect as these breeders’ main focus is “breeding for profit”. So, don’t expect high quality breed even though it might claim to be pure-bred pugs. Puppy millers with budget constraints are literally force to compromise on their breeding standards. What could you expect from pugs which live in a small, suffocating cage, under extreme temperature and being fed with the lowest grade food possible?

Coupled with close proximity with all other dogs, which may potentially suffered from infectious diseases (such as skin disease, gastrointestinal disease and respiratory diseases) will definitely increase the risk of diseases on the pugs from this source.

These problems may not be prominent, but it will lead to long-term respiratory problems, liver problems or even ill-tempered pugs due to a lack of socialization during the first few weeks of birth.

So, what are the relevant questions you should ask these 4 sources of breeders? Here are 5 questions that you could ask them (especially to reputable pug breeders) to get more information before making your purchase:

1. How long have you (the breeder) been breeding pugs?

2. What type of health screening test do you (the breeder) perform on your pugs? Some of the more common health screening tests that are recommended to be performed by most reputable pug breeders include:

(a) Hip Dysplasia

(b) Legg-Calve-Perthes disease

(c) Irregular heartbeat

(d) Slipped Stifles

(e) Cataracts

(f) Corneal Ulcers

(g) Dry Eye

(h) Eyelids and Eyelashes check

(i) Elongated Soft Palate

(j) Pug Dog Encephalitis

(k) Hay Fever

(l) Skin mites

(m) Entropion

(n) Generalized Progressive Retinal Atrophy

(o) Pinched or Undersized Nostrils

(p) Hemivertebras

3. What is the history of your chosen pug (specifically on the origin of the chosen pug’s parents), where were they bred and in what kind of condition)?

4. Where were the pugs bred and in what kind of conditions were they brought up?

5. Is there any return policy, and does the breeder guarantee the pugs being free from hereditary defects?

The initial stage of choosing the right source for a pug puppy is most important. If you haven’t brought or adopted any pug puppy before, you should screen through this information and check with your local breeders.

My advice would be to take your time and don’t rush. It often takes a couple of visits before the final decision is made. Consult your friends, neighbours or anyone that you know who owns a pug dog and get some advice from them.

Warm regards, Ken Tan A Pug Enthusiast

Homemade Dog Food, Your Hunting Dog Will Love You

Monday, May 25th, 2009

Lizzie Novotny asked:

My two Vizsla hunting dogs get homemade dog food twice each day. I mix an adjusted amount with good quality dry kibble.

Homemade dog food can be better than some commercial products. We don’t realize what’s in the food we give our pets. Always inspect the ingredients.

Commercial dog foods can contain preservatives, and are altered by chemical processes that can be unhealthy for dogs. They can also contain processed unknown animal products and fillers that do nothing to contribute to your pet’s health.

To avoid your dogs ingesting unknown dog food ingredients, make your own. Control not only the content, but the quality as well.

Reasons To Consider A Homemade Dog Food

- dog has allergies to food

- persistent skin problems

- gastrointestinal upsets including diarrhea or constipation

- competes in sporting events or working stock and needs strength for endurance

- control of quality and freshness

- nothing processed so food retains all the vitamins, antioxidants and enzymes

Observe your dog to see he is getting his required dog food nutrition.

- shiny coat, illustrious feel

- sparkling eyes

- alert, good energy and activity

- maintain weight without getting fat

- stool firm and consistent

An appropriately balanced dog food recipe contains roughly 40% meat, 30% starch and 30% vegetables.

1. Meat: Any type can be included. Organ meat, such as liver, is particularly healthy for dogs. Bones should be removed as they are a choking hazard. Cook the meat - uncooked meat can contain unhealthy bacteria and possibly parasites.

2. Starch: Most forms are okay - cooked pasta, potatoes, and rice are common choices for homemade dog food.

3. Vegetables: Most types can be used. Do not use onions as they can be toxic. Cook the vegetables - raw veggies can pose a choking hazard.

Recipe For Quick Adult Homemade Dog Food

This recipe will feed a 50 pound adult dog for one day. If your dog in smaller or larger then the 50 pounds, adjust the amount of ingredients. You can cook enough for many days, divide accordingly and freeze the rest. This food has No preservatives, so refrigerate the fresh food for 3 days maximum. The human vitamin supplement Theragran-M Advanced and calcium carbonate (example: Tums) can be found in any pharmacy.

- 5 oz. dark meat chicken or turkey beef or fish

- 2 1/8 cups cooked brown rice

- 1 tsp. corn oil

- 1/2 tsp. salt

- 2 pills Theragran-M Advanced (crushed)

- 2100 milligrams calcium carbonate (crushed)

Directions:

1. Cook rice until done.

2. Bake your meat, poultry, or fish choice 325 degrees for 30 minutes.

3. Crush human vitamins and “Tums”.

4. Mix all ingredients.

Pay attention to your dog’s response to the new dog food recipes you use. There may be items they refuse to eat or have reactions to a particular food. Try something else in their place, such as substitute chicken for turkey or rice for potatoes. Be aware for changes in your dog’s behavior, especially things such as excessive scratching. This could indicate an allergy to one of the foods you are using.

Homemade dog food recipes generally cause fewer allergic reactions than commercial brands. Plus, by making dog food recipes at home, you can control the proportion of different ingredients. This can be very important to working and sporting breeds that may require more nutrients for their active lifestyles.

While in the kitchen, why not whip up some dog biscuits. Recipes can be found on the Internet, or try your library. Here is an easy dog biscuit recipe, use it for training or a treat. I have never met a dog who didn’t love his cheese!

Any Cheese Biscuits

- 1 cup all purpose flour

- 1 cup whole wheat flour

- 1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar, Swiss, mozzarella, or any cheese in the fridge)… dogs Love any type of cheese!

- 2 tbsp. butter

- 3/4 cup milk, lowfat

- grated parmesan for topping (if you have it on hand)

Good Food and Good Exercise Make for a Healthy Dog

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

Patricia Reed asked:

Owning a dog provides many benefits, but you only get out of them as much as you put into them. Good training, good shelter, good food, fresh water and regular exercise and a happy home are all that a dog needs to be content.

Just as the wrong foods can hurt the health of humans, the same goes for the health of dogs. There are some things that are quite dangerous to feed a dog. Make sure you know what those are to avoid harming them.

Feed your dog premium pet food and fresh meat and make sure you get out and take them for a walk or a run. This gives us a good excuse to get out ourselves and exercise as well. You could say that owning a dog actually keeps humans healthier. Certainly a well-trained and healthy dog keeps us a lot happier.

Many people are unaware that some foods that we eat on a regualr basis can be deadly to your dog.

For example: a piece of chocolate can cause seizures, coma and death. Even a small piece of chocolate is dangerous. Anything containing caffeine can have a similar effect and be as dangerous as chocolate, and that includes coffee grounds, tea and tea bags.

Grapes and raisins can cause kidney failure and even a single serving of raisins can kill your dog.

Excessive salt intake can also cause kidney problems.

Onions can cause anemia by destroying red blood cells while tomatoes can cause tremors and heart arrhythmias.

Tomato plants are particularly toxic to dogs.

Avacadoes are also highly toxic and can cause breathing difficulty and fluid accumulation around the abdomen, chest and heart.

When giving your dog bones ensure that they are raw as cooked bones can splinter and damage their internal organs.

Excessive fat can cause pancreatitis, so it is not wise to feed your dog a diet of fatty foods.

Fried foods also fall into this category and are not good to retain maximum health in your dog.

Certain nuts, such as Macadamia nuts and walnuts can cause weakness and muscle tremors.

Peanut butter however is generally okay provided you use the salt and sugar free peanut butter as sugar can encourage cancer growth.

The core and pits of fruits such as Apple’s cherries and peaches contain cyanide, which is poisonous to dogs and can kill them within 24-hours without warning.

If in doubt, always refrain from feeding your dog foods that we are eating assuming that they will be okay.

What is safe for humans can kill your dog within hours.

So, do yourself and your dog a favor and don’t feed them human food. As they always say, it is better to be safe than sorry and if you love your dog like I do, you do not want to lose them very soon. I have just recently experienced the unexpected loss of two pets and I am hopeful that it was nothing that I did that may have caused it. The loss of those two pets will stay with me for a very long time. They were my friends.
