Does this recipe sound healthy for dogs?
A L asked:
I’ve made some adjustments to the last recipe I had asked about. Here is the revised addition. Does this sound any healthier?
2cups oatmeal
2cups whole wheat flour
1/2honey
1cup chopped apples
1egg
1tsp.baking soda
3TBS.peanut butter
1cup margarine (I forgot this ingredient last time and it’s pretty necessary to hold everything together).
Tell me how that sounds. I don’t want to be feeding my dog something bad for her!
Dog Food Secrets

Sounds okay
Will you be making a meat treat as well? Just wondering - I am trying to come up with something for my greyhounds..
I am hoping this is a treat and not what you intend to feed every day. Are you baking this? I would sooner see you use olive oil than margarine.
If it is to make a dog biscuit or something yes but if it is for food, no dogs dont need grains especially not that many where is the meat!
Everything sounds ok but the 1 cup of margarine. Best to use water or skim milk. Also use peanut butter that is natural with no added salt or sugar.
All this assuming you are making a treat and this is not a recipe to make as a meal.
i dont think that sounds very healthy fo a dog, some dogs are allergic or become alleric overnight to certain ingreidiants(wheat is a big culprit) wich can end up with ear infection like symptons ect so ul end up with a large vet bill and a poorly pup! why are you not feeding them dog food?? after all it is a dog. this is why dogs have problems as we treat them like humans…….its a DOG! lol what ever you decide check with your vet or dog diet specialist because you obviously want whats best for your doggy!!
this sounds VERY good for a dog. it is nutricious and healthy. the only thing dogs cant have is raisins, grapes, prunes, avacados, and chocolate. if you want something chocolatey, try karob chips instead. they are safe for dogs to eat, and humans!
Depends on what you are planning to use it for. As an occasional treat, should be fine. Make sure not to include the apple seeds (they have arsenic in them). This is not a good balanced diet to be fed as the only food, though. It’s quite a bit of grain as well…has the potential to make your pooch a little chubby.
Not really most recipes for dogs use a vegetable oil not butter or margarine, there are so many books for dog recipes and even websites, the more I look at it the better it sounds I do think you should use Veg. oil and see how it goes
For those who want to make treats with meat, these are from a greyhound cookbook:
1 lb beef liver
1 lb frozen spinach, thawed (squueze out moisture)
2 eggs
4 - 5 C oatmeal
garlic powder
Use a food processor to puree the liver. Add spinach and garlic and puree again. Add eggs (include shells) and blend. Add oatmeal one cup at a time for first 4, then add just enough to make a THICK batter. Scoop and press into a jelly roll pan. Bake at 350 for 30 minutes until top is dry. Removed from oven and cut into 1 1/2 inch squares. Remove from pan with spatula and trun upside down into another pan or two and place back into oven for 15 minutes. Turn oven of and let cook for about 1 hour. The cookies will come out leathery. If you want a harder cookie, bake and leave in oven longer to dry.
