Dog Food Secrets
i had to put my cocker spaniel on a special diet
rice , turkey and green bean ..the loved it and it is very healthy for them ..give him/her one cup twice a day
Rice is a great base for dog food. Cook it in no sodium broth and add cooked lean meat. You can add a little fat if your dog can handle it. I like to give our dogs chicken but lamb and beef area also good choices. I’ve read that pork is not good for dogs.
Toss in some cooked vegetables. I’ve read that onion and garlic are not good for dogs. I’ve also read that they are good for dogs. I choose to avoid both.
When I have more time I plan to can dog food with a 3/1 ratio of rice to meat and mix it with carrots, peas, & green beans.
Although your dog’s food will look and smell like human food, there should be no salt in it. The taste will be bland to you. If you give your dog human food that looks and smells the same, it will be loaded with salt, fat, and ??? and will be very bad for your dog.
Before you consider a homemade diet, you need to consult your vet. You’ll need to know what ratio of protein vs. carbs vs. healthy fats are best for your dog and only a vet will know that in addition to the proper number of calories that your dog will need based on it’s weight and age. In addition, there are specific supplements you’ll need to add to your homemade diet. Dogs require different amino acids/trace minerals/vitamins than we do and you’ll need to get all of this info from your vet. You can also get a nutritional consultation based on the specific needs of your pet on a site called petdiets.com but the cost is pretty steep at $200. I’ve just done this with my dog, but it’s necessary due to some chronic health issues.
